I’ve just finished the first ‘volume’ of Jane Eyre, meaning I’m about half-way through. I’m also watching the 2007 TV version in four episodes with Ruth Wilson and Toby Stevens. The picture quality is terrible, and the attempt at dramatizing the scenes, particularly at the beginning, with forced-perspective upshots and rapid angle and scene shifts is really off-putting. I’m not sure which of the versions would be best. I noticed there is also a 2011 version with Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender. I might have to try that one too.
While looking up the various film versions on the wikipedia page under adaptations and influence, I did note a couple of books I added to my list of things to read: Reader, I married him; a collection of Jane Eyre inspired short stories, and The French Dancer’s Bastard, by Emma Tennant, a reimagining of Adéle, Jane’s student at Thornfield Hall
