Continuing the Music I Love: the 70’s series, here are some songs from 1975.
OK, by now, I’m 13, in junior high, and fully developing my own sense of music that I like. It’s also the flowering of Disco, which at the time, was the antithesis of where I was going musically. I was solidly in the “disco sucks” camp. By I could admit to some select friends that I thought Donna Summer was kinda hot, and later on (1978 to be exact) I could admit I did in fact like Peaches and Herb’s nominal hit- Reunited. But in general, I was not going to admit to any disco songs having any merit whatsoever. My list sort of reflects that too.
Boogie Shoes– KC and the Sunshine Band
KC and the Sunshine Band were a sort of funk band. They wrote some really catchy stuff and this little song is one of those- guaranteed to have you bopping along.
Born to Run– Bruce Springsteen
Bruce Springsteen had several hits that I really liked. Born to Run was probably the first one I remember and it’s just a great song.
Landslide– Fleetwood Mac
Fleetwood Mac was a superb band with a bunch of great songs, and not many of them made it onto my list of favorites… except this one, which is still one I’ll sit and play on the guitar. I should add that if I were to continue this list of year-by-year favorites into the 80’s, Gypsy and Little Lies would make it.
Kashmir– Led Zeppelin
A slow-bluesy, yet somehow slightly middle-eastern-y tune that drives in such an entrancing way that it’s really one of my favorite Zep songs… and I loved most everything Zep did too, so that’s saying something.
Sweet Emotion– Aerosmith
Aerosmith was for sure a rock band. But they were also melodic, which is something I couldn’t say of some of the 80’s metal bands. This song drives, but also has great harmonies.
Lyin’ Eyes– The Eagles
OK, the Eagles could probably have had about 10 songs make my list, but I’m trying to keep it down to my real favorites… this is one of those that has a great melody, great harmonies and well, I sing with it when it comes on.
Yesterday, I updated several of the lists because I found songs that should have been included. This year too may have some omissions that will need to be corrected.
