My nephew, at around 9-10 years old, discovered he was somewhat of a chess prodigy. He started beating everyone in his path, and soon enough, it was my turn to play him. His mom begged me: please beat him and put him back in his place! I know how to play chess, but I’ve never been very good at it. So I figured if I couldn’t match him in chess skills, I’d have to employ other means. So I decided that I, as an adult, had the advantage of patience over a child. Accordingly, I took a very long time to make every move. It was starting to drive him up the wall, but I held to the plan. At some point, he began to second guess himself and give away moves I should be making that I hadn’t even thought of. And eventually, I actually beat him. My sister-in-law was grateful for that. And I swore right then I’d never play him in chess again because I knew I couldn’t get away with that move a second time. So I’m just going to rest on the fact that this one time… I beat an actual chess prodigy at chess.
