Funny Stories: Hooray and appropriate suffixes

So a few years ago, I was driving along when I thought of a great phrase, one that I thought had the potential to really catch on. You know how people append –ness to a word to denote a condition; such as happiness or sadness? Sad is an adjective used to convey the feeling of unhappiness. Sadness is the noun form that conveys the condition. Well, I thought it would be awesome to add –ness to the exclamation ‘hooray’, so I blurted out, in an appropriate moment, mind you, that required, or at least supported, a hooray… Hoorayness!

My wife looked over at me and broke out laughing at the top of her lungs, and I was like, “I know, right? Isn’t that a great word?” And she says, ‘her anus’?!? Uh, oh. Yeah, I say…. I guess that isn’t gonna work.

When I explain to her my thought process and how I thought it had real potential to catch on, she was in hysterics. I had seen the word in my head, and there, without really hearing it as much as reading it, hooray-ness seemed like a perfectly valid combination. It wasn’t until she said it back to me out loud, that I realized the particular sound combination was going to bring up something we aren’t supposed to mention in polite company.

So, you know… another great idea shot down by the facts.
