Funny Stories: The Gift that Keeps On Giving

In one of my Dad’s later years, he was in the beginning stages of dementia and also having a hard time getting around. On my mom’s birthday, he had asked if I could take him over to the store to get her a gift because 1) he couldn’t really go on his own, and 2) it had sort of slipped his mind….

So we go over to wal-mart, which is really close and dad picks out this air-fryer kitchen gadget for my mom.

When present-opening time comes around, she opens it up and feigns adoration of the gift that her husband had so thoughtfully gotten her… at which point my dad says: Now you can make me some fries.

My dad had a real dead-pan sense of humor, so he would say inane stuff with a straight face, knowing that it was funny. My wife lost it with that one though. Even my mom had to smile.

I know for some people, that comment might not seem funny because their experience is that the husband or father is really that kind of thoughtless. But my dad was not, he was actually very considerate and loving, so when he said it, we all knew it was a joke.
