Music I Love: 1972

Continuing the Music I Love: the 70’s series, here are some songs from 1972.

Brandy– Looking Glass  (1972)
This song is a classic that I think nearly everyone knows. Apparently, it became both a blessing. Because of how famous it was, and a curse to the band. The curse was because it was way outside of what they normally did, which was more rock and roll. Suddenly, the legion of new fans wants to hear more songs like Brandy, which isn’t what Looking Glass was about.

Still, for all the rest of us, this is just a great story song. I’m terrible at remembering lyrics and yet even I know most of this song 50 years later.

Dancing in the Moonlight– King Harvest  (1972)
Another song that nearly everyone knows, and for good reason: it’s a super-catchy and singable song.

Will It Go Round In Circles– Billy Preston  (1972)
Funk from the master- Billy Preston.  I had this song on a K-Tel record. K-Tel records were compilations of various hits, advertised on TV. From the moment I heard this song, I loved the groove, and I still love this song today.

Take It Easy– The Eagles  (1972)
Another song that nearly everyone knows. It single handedly put Winslow, AZ on the map.

Doctor My Eyes– Jackson Browne (1972)
It’s a classic.

Rocketman– Elton John  (1972)
My sister played piano when she was growing up and had the song book from Elton’s Greatest hits. I used to sit on the piano and pick out different songs. This was one of them. It’s a great song and I think just about everyone in the English-speaking world knows it.

Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress– The Hollies
I had forgotten this one when I originally posted, but as soon as I remembered it, I had to add it to the list.

Reeling in the Years- Steely Dan

I Can See Clearly Now– Johnny Nash

Burning Love– Elvis Presley
Such a great bass line….

Time in a Bottle– Jim Croce

The thing that gets each of these songs on my list is the fact that I still love to hear them today. There were a ton of songs that I liked back then, and I guess I still do to some extent, but these have each stood the test of time.
