Music I Love: 1973

Continuing the Music I Love: the 70’s series, here are some songs from 1973.

Being somewhat of a music late-bloomer, these were my first years of pop music consciousness. And I was already 11. Unlike many of you that grew up in later generations, my parents were not lovers of the pop music of the day. They liked watching the Lawrence Welk show, which was an old variety show that featured out of date entertainment that was probably popular in the 30’s and 40’s. They didn’t care for any kind of rock and roll as far as I could tell, and as far as they were in charge of what we watched and listened to as kids, it was NOT going to be anything cool. So it wasn’t until 5th or 6th grade and having my own transistor radio that I started actually seeking out my own music. Even so, not all of the music in these lists are things I remember from right when they came out. It probably wasn’t too long after, but I certainly wasn’t on the cutting edge of what was happening in the music scene. I mean I was 11…..

But even among 11 year olds, I wasn’t in the cool kids group.

Anyway… here are the songs from 1973 that I have listed.

Shambala– Three Dog Night
A bunch of the songs I have in these lists are songs that nearly everyone knows, even kids from later generations. This one… maybe not as much. But it’s still a song I love.

Dance With Me- Orleans
Orleans has two hits on my list, this is my second favorite, but it’s still worthy of inclusion.

China Grove– Doobie Brothers
This song has a killer bass line and great groove.

Takin’ Care of Business– BTO
I swear I think everyone knows this song, and for good reason too… it’s just a super catchy and fun song.

Gimme Three Steps– Lynyrd Skynyrd
Southern rock at its finest. This is a catchy song, with story lyrics that are easy to sing along too and it’s really funny too.

Midnight Train to Georgia–  Gladys Knight and the Pips
OK, THIS is one I remember trolling the radio for- I love this song. And the Pips counterpoint lyrics are a hoot too.

Dream On– Aerosmith
Aerosmith had a lot of great songs, but this one might be my favorite. I mean, Walk This Way and Sweet Emotion are up there too, but Dream On…

Drift Away– Dobie Gray
Weeeelllll, gimme the beat boys to free my soul, oh I wanna get lost in your rock and rooooooll and drift away….

Bennie and the Jets– Elton John

Desperado- The Eagles
I can’t believe I forgot this song on the original post, because this is one that I truly LOVE. I’ve learned this (and forgotten it) on the piano, and I think I love nearly everything about this song.
