Continuing the Music I Love: the 70’s series, here are some songs from 1978.
I’m in high school at this point. This must have been a good year for music, because I have 7 songs on the list, from wildly varying styles.
Werewolves of London– Warren Zevon
This would almost classify as a gimmick song. Zevon half talks his way through the verses, and the chorus is “Awooooooo, werewolves of London…. Awoooooooo”. But dang skippy if isn’t the catchiest tune. You see if you don’t find yourself singing along with the chorus.
Beast of Burden– The Rolling Stones
The Rolling Stones have been called the Greatest Rock n Roll Band. While I like some of their music, very little would make my list. This song, however, is probably my favorite Stones song.
Baby Come Back– Player
I don’t know who else remembers this song, but I do, and yep, it makes the list.
The Sultans of Swing– Dire Straits
Well-known song for a good reason. It’s a great song. Some of the cleanest guitar work you’ll hear too. Kind of a sad story song, with an irresistible groove.
Surrender- Cheap Trick
Great tune and harmonies with some head-scratching lyrics, but it’s such a catchy song that who cares if we really don’t know what he’s talking about.
Too Much Heaven– The BeeGees
At the time, there was no way on God’s green earth you were gonna get me to admit I liked a BeeGees song. They were the poster boys for the whole Saturday Night Fever/Disco thing that I hated so much. But given some time and maturity, I can admit they were popular for a reason, and this is probably my favorite of their songs.
Hanging on the Telephone– Blondie
Blondie was in the new wave camp of rock that was starting to hit. I was a bit resistant to new wave and I didn’t really care for punk music at all, but Blondie had a bunch of songs that I liked and this one is still one of my favorites.
