I was born in 62, but I don’t really remember too much about music from the 60s.
A few 60’s songs that I became aware of afterward and just really love are:
For What It’s Worth- Buffalo Springfield (1966)
Tears of a Clown- Smokey Robinson (1967)
In My Room- Beach Boys (1963)
I mean, I had to pick one Beach Boys song, but there are so many that I could have picked.
Feelin’ Alright- Joe Cocker (1969)
Yeah, I know… he looks possessed on the cover picture they have for this video…
Brown-Eyed Girl- Van Morrison (1967)
Mrs Robinson- Simon and Garfunkel (1968)
There are a ton more, but the point isn’t so much the 60’s as the 70’s, which is where I was aware enough to start forming my own opinions about music. The Beatles alone have a ton that could be added to the list, but anyway, on to the 70’s.
Maybe the first pop/radio song that I really remember loving- I remember trolling my transistor radio for Song Sung Blue by Neil Diamond (1972).
My first single that I ever bought, was Heartbeat, It’s a Lovebeat, by the DeFranco Family (1974). Bubblegum for sure, but I was 12 so… that’s the best I can do for an excuse. I’m not including those two songs in the list of my favorites because while I loved them at the time, they haven’t stood the test of time for me as songs I still would love to hear.
But here’s a list of songs from the 70s that I still love. And I’ll have to go year by year.
I Want You Back– Jackson 5 (1970)
Yeah it’s kind of bubble gummy too, but the bass line is still killer and the song is catchy as all get-out. And well… I love it, so there.
Signed, Sealed, Delivered– Stevie Wonder (1970)
This song is super catchy as well, and like I Want You Back, has a killer bass line.
Fire and Rain– James Taylor (1970)
Melancholy, but I’m partial to melancholy songs.
