Songs with Memories Attached: pt 3

If It Makes You Happy– Sheryl Crow

Ok, so this one is gonna take some setup. Back at the time I was working at ‘the studio’ which was the art studio my brother-in-law Kenny had; we were all engaged in doing Children’s books, mostly utilizing Disney characters. One of the movies we watched was the Goofy Movie. (I actually really like the Goofy Movie, so don’t judge me.) But anyway, one of the characters was called Bobby, and was voiced by Pauly Shore. It was the prototypical Pauly Shore character- surfer/slacker dude. At one point, Max, the main character, pays Bobby off for a favor- by bringing him a can of that nasty spray cheese in a can. Bobby responds with an ecstatic: Awoooooo Cheddar! For context, you can see the scene here at about 47 seconds in.

So, with the set up done, it was 1997 (or so), and there were a bunch of us all working at my brother-in-law Kenny’s art studio. We were great friends and we used to listen to this radio station- can’t remember which, but it’s probably defunct now anyway. Even today, a lot of the songs that they played* automatically bring me back to that time, and it’s a really good memory for me. But anyway, one of them was If It Makes You Happy by Sheryl Crow.

I really loved that song and for some reason, every time I would hear the song come on, I would mimic the Pauly Shore bit by blurting out “Awooooooo, She-ryllllll”.

To this day, I think everyone who worked at that studio will  automatically remember Awoooooo, She-ryllllll…..“ whenever they hear this song.

*some of the songs were:
Only Wanna Be With You- Hootie and the Blowfish
One Headlight- The Wallflowers
How’s It Going To Be- Third Eye Blind
Mr Jones- Counting Crows
No Rain- Blind Melon

PS:
My brother-in-law was also into country, so we frequently got a dose of that. I seem to remember Garth Brooks, Martina McBride and Shania Twain being on a lot… but one amusing anecdote was me hearing the lyrics to some forgotten song by some forgotten artist, where the woman was singing about how she wants to cut loose and break all the rules (Loosely paraphrased)…. I remarked that the next three songs would be about how she was broke, knocked up, and in jail.
Everyone laughed.
