Christmas Playlist

While I’m not the kind of person that LOVES Christmas music, I do love music in general and I like Christmas, and there is a ton of Christmas music, so….. naturally there will be some Christmas music that I love. Now, my taste in Christmas music runs decidedly towards the melancholy. I’m not sure why this is, I don’t consider myself to be a melancholy person, but it is.

So I’m listing some of my favorites, in no particular order.

Have Yourself Merry Little Christmas
The original was Judy Garland from the show Meet Me in St. Louis. This one by Boyce Ave is nice:

Have Yourself Merry Little Christmas (Ella Fitzgerald swinging version)
This version is more upbeat, but I really like it. I’m posting IMY2’s cover.

I’ll Be Home For Christmas
The original was written for Bing Crosby. This version by Lizzy McAlpine is nice.

Noel- Lauren Daigle Chris Tomlin
This is a lovely song altogether. But this song contains one of those moments that is so hauntingly beautiful I get chills. After the break, she comes back in on the chorus: Noel, Noel, come and see what God has done. Noel, No-EL…. on that second Noel of the second line, she drops the first note, (no, of no-el) 2 steps lower than the usual, and then hits the second note (el of the no-el) a third higher than usual. That jump makes such an impact that it transports the entire song to another level. I don’t know if anyone else gets the same reaction, but I FEEL that moment. It represents to me all that music has the power to do: take a truth and elevate it beyond the intellectual to something you can emotionally attach to as well.

Please Come Home for Christmas- the Eagles

O Come, O Come Emmanuel
I don’t have a particular reference for this one, but I love the song.

Home Alone Too- The Staves

and completely out of the ‘melancholy’ mold for me….

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus- the Jackson 5

If I think of anything else, I’ll put it up.
