2022 DC to Philly: Day 3

Oct 2 Sunday- Charlottesville and Alexandria

The original plan was to hike to BlackRock, a peak where one could view the sunrise and the glorious fall colors of the Shenandoah Valley. That didn’t happen. Instead, Hurricane Ian dropped water continuously from the sky. So, we blew off the morning hike, but then went to Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello, which got us back on track for our schedule of events.

Walking in these same places where our founding fathers lived and walked gives a sense of connection to the past.

Monticello was built on a mountain top, which supposedly provides views all around of up to 60 miles when it’s clear. It wasn’t clear for most of the time, but it did clear as the tour was ending just enough for us to get a decent view off to the east.

For lunch we went to a place called Michie (pronounced mickey) Tavern 1784. Yep, it was established in 1784. Food was a buffet style; good, but not great. But what a great sense of history to eat in this old tavern.

Then we got back in the car and drove… through the rain… back to Alexandria. And… hooray… American Airlines had delivered my luggage to the hotel, so there was that. Ate in some hipster area of Alexandria at a place called Copperwood Tavern.
