After breakfast at The Bean and Bakery coffee shop, we hit the road to drive to Portland, Maine, about 2 and a half hours away.
We arrived just after 10a and couldn’t check in to our hotel yet,
so we parked the car and walked around. We were just a few block from the water, so we headed down to the docks first,
and then up around to Fort Allen, a historical fort site situated on a hill overlooking the bay. This afforded some really great views of the surrounding area.
Then we walked to a local place called Duckfat,
that I’d heard about in an episode of Somebody Feed Phil. Got the poutine and duckfat Belgian fries and a blueberry shake. You gotta have blueberries from Maine.
Then we headed off for a tour of the Victoria Mansion.
After that we headed back to check in to our hotel, which was again, fantastic. We a great view of the harbor from the window.
Then we headed back out to the Wadsworth Longfellow home, where we took another tour
before winding our way back through the town to our hotel.
On the way back though we had stopped for some gelato at Gorgeous Gelato and an espresso mid afternoon from Bard Coffee. We were mainly just looking for a place to hold up the trek and rest for a bit.
We caught the sunset from the hotel
before heading back out that evening to Luke’s Lobster on one of the piers.
The place was packed and my intention was to get whole lobsters, but whole lobsters are a pain to eat, so I opted for the lazy choice- a lobster roll, this time hot. Delicious stuff!
Then trudged back to the hotel with aching feet and legs, but not before stopping at their hotel bar/restaurant for a dessert, which I think was a crème brulee.
